"Some Got Up" filmed live at Savor Cinema in Fort Lauderdale during the James Malcolm Band's December 2025 concert run.

This is a cinematic music video built from a live performance rather than a staged shoot. The song is played once, in front of an audience, and the film has to work with what the room gives you: the lighting the venue is already running, the band's own blocking, and one take.

That constraint is the point. A live cut carries something a controlled set cannot, because the performance is real and the crowd is reacting to it in the frame.

What one take actually costs

Every safety net a music video normally has is gone. No relighting between setups, no second pass at the chorus, no asking the singer to hit that line again from a better angle. The song plays once. Coverage has to be earned inside a single performance, which means the cameras have to be in the right places before the first note rather than moved into them.

The room is part of the frame

A staged music video removes the audience because the audience is unpredictable. Here the crowd is the reason the thing works. You can see people responding in real time, and that reaction is not something a performance can fake to camera. The venue's own lighting rig does the rest. It was designed for the people in the seats, not for me, and working with it rather than against it is what keeps the film looking like the night it actually was.

About the band

The James Malcolm Band is a Fort Lauderdale project working in country, Americana and country-rock storytelling. Lead singer and co-founder Malcolm Philip Flavell named it in tribute to his late father. Their debut album Never Too Late came out through Settle Down Productions on November 26, 2025.

You can find them at jamesmalcolmband.com.

The concert film from the same run covers the wider night, and the Knock on Marble music video was the first project with this team.

This project is one part of a longer story. Read the full case study here.
