Real life, made to look as good as it feels. Lifestyle work for brands and people who want images with warmth and motion, not staged perfection. The candid end of the spectrum, done intentionally.
The brief is usually to make ordinary life look good, and the failure mode is making it look like an advert for ordinary life: everyone laughing at nothing, holding a mug at an angle no human holds a mug.
Motion helps.
Warm, soft, directional light, and rooms allowed to keep some shadow.
So I give people something real to do and photograph the doing.
Lifestyle work lives or dies on whether it feels observed or staged.
Someone mid-task has their hands and their attention occupied, which is the fastest route to a face that is not braced for a camera.
The aim is images with the texture of an actual afternoon, not a set built to look like one.
What actually helps on the day
Pick somewhere you already use. A kitchen, a porch, a stretch of beach you walk anyway. Bring the actual activity with it: the coffee, the dog, the bike that needs fixing. Wear what you already own. Clothes bought for the shoot photograph like clothes bought for the shoot.
Once it's underway I mostly get out of the way. I'll move a lamp, open a blind, ask you to run something again from the top. Then I stop talking and let the room settle.
What people are actually reading
A viewer decides whether a lifestyle photo is true long before they get to the face. They read the countertop. The worn step. Whether the mug looks used. Whether the dog is actually interested in what's happening. Get those wrong and the smile can be perfect and the picture still won't land.
So I shoot the surroundings as carefully as the people, and I leave the mess where it is if the mess is honest. Most of my decisions in a room like that are about what to leave in, not what to move.
